Baileys 3.1.1 Plus vs Baileys 4.1.1 - Which one is better?

What’s the difference and which one should I use? Is the 4.1.1 better? This is one of the most common questions we get when it comes to Baileys granular fertiliser.
Based on analysis they are similar, see below.
3.1.1 Plus
12.1N, 0.90P, 9K, 15.7S, 2Ca, 0.77Fe, 0.28Mn, 0.55Mg
4.1.1
16.9N, 0P, 10K, 13.1S, 2.16Ca, 1.05Fe, 0.65Mn, 0.48Mg
From an analysis perspective the key difference is 4.1.1 has significantly more nitrogen but no Phosphorus. Nitrogen promotes leaf growth and colour while phosphorus helps with root development and overall plant health but is not recommended for use close to waterways. The prill consistency and size across both variants is very similar.
The main difference comes in the type of nitrogen which makes 4.1.1 more effective during the cooler months. A significant proportion of the nitrogen in 4.1.1 is in the form of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate which is released faster and more easily absorbed + utilised by the lawn during the cooler months.
3.1.1 Plus does not utilise calcium ammonium nitrate and releases nutrients slower which is not ideal during cooler months but absolutely fine when it warms up. During the warmer months the lawn is in a better position to absorb nutrients from the soil. For the warmer months 3.1.1 Plus also has wetting agent in the form of Grosorb to assist with moisture penetration and retention.
Can you use either one all year round?
The simple answer is yes… however the 3.1.1 Plus will not be as effective during winter. The 4.1.1 can be used all year round but releases nutrients faster so reapplication will be required more frequently. More frequent applications in a lower dosage when it warms up would be the way to utilise 4.1.1 during the warmer months and maximise its effectiveness if you are hoping to utilise one granular fertiliser all year round.
